TL;DR
This week we’re mixing it up. Instead of our normal format, I’m giving you 50 AI tools that are actually relevant to your workflows to help you move faster, get less frustrated, and get more done.
AI news: Andreeson says AI is friend not foe, tech folks are returning to the bay, and AI prompt engineering is a passing fad.
You know what I really don’t like? Lists of AI tools without any context. Nearly everyday I’m sent a new list of AI tools on LinkedIn with flimsy, broad descriptions of what the tools do (if I’m lucky), and frankly I’m sick of it. In the spirit of automation, shouldn’t lists of AI tools be actionable without, you know, actually having to read every product’s homepage? I certainly think so, and that’s why I put together the following list.
If you’ve been a subscriber for some time then you’ll be familiar with the way I like to list AI products - with a clear audience (product makers) in mind and a bias towards actionability - ie, “if you have this use case, this AI tool is worth checking out.” With the insane proliferation of AI tooling these last few months, any other format of list is guaranteed to be an absolute waste of time. So, I’ve collected the top 25 here in Substack, with the full list of 50 linked here on my blog for PlayerZero. Without any further ado, let’s jump into the list:
🤖 PlayerZero
Functional category - product intelligence
The product - PlayerZero is a comprehensive real-time product experience monitoring platform that leverages a unique combination of analytics and engineering data. It provides an in-depth look into the behavior and experiences of your users, highlighting root causes of issues as they occur. The platform not only prioritizes initiatives that propel your business forward but also equips your team with all necessary data to diagnose and address problems. The use case - for product managers striving to enhance user experience, PlayerZero is an invaluable tool. Imagine you are launching a new feature in your product. With PlayerZero, you can monitor the user interactions with this feature in real time, understand their behavior leading up to any issues, and see what was happening behind the scenes from an engineering perspective. This real-time monitoring allows you to identify and address any potential hiccups as soon as they occur, preventing a small glitch from turning into a widespread problem. Furthermore, the engineering data provided by PlayerZero can help you coordinate a strong, well-informed response, ensuring that you fix the issue swiftly and effectively. PlayerZero not only helps you improve your product, but also allows you to measure the success of your efforts, providing valuable insights to drive your product strategy forward. Its got all of the insights of product analytics, all the actionability of monitoring, all in a format that anyone - technical or not, can get a ton of value from.

Chronicles of the circuit circus
Why AI will save the world - by Marc Andreessen for Andreeson Horowitz. The big pull quote:
“First, a short description of what AI is: The application of mathematics and software code to teach computers how to understand, synthesize, and generate knowledge in ways similar to how people do it. AI is a computer program like any other – it runs, takes input, processes, and generates output. AI’s output is useful across a wide range of fields, ranging from coding to medicine to law to the creative arts. It is owned by people and controlled by people, like any other technology.
A shorter description of what AI isn’t: Killer software and robots that will spring to life and decide to murder the human race or otherwise ruin everything, like you see in the movies.”
They Fled San Francisco. The A.I. Boom Pulled Them Back. - by Erin Griffith for The New York Times. The big pull quote:
“The A.I. boom is also luring back founders of other kinds of tech companies. Brex, a financial technology start-up, declared itself “remote first” early in the pandemic, closing its 250-person office in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood. The company’s founders, Henrique Dubugras and Pedro Franceschi, decamped for Los Angeles.
But when generative A.I. began taking off last year, Mr. Dubugras, 27, was eager to see how Brex could adopt the technology. He quickly realized that he was missing out on the coffees, casual conversations and community happening around A.I. in San Francisco, he said.”
AI Prompt Engineering Isn’t the Future - Oguz A. Acar for Harvard Business Review. The big pull quote:
“... despite the buzz surrounding it, the prominence of prompt engineering may be fleeting for several reasons. First, future generations of AI systems will get more intuitive and adept at understanding natural language, reducing the need for meticulously engineered prompts. Second, new AI language models like GPT4 already show great promise in crafting prompts — AI itself is on the verge of rendering prompt engineering obsolete. Lastly, the efficacy of prompts is contingent upon the specific algorithm, limiting their utility across diverse AI models and versions.
So, what is a more enduring and adaptable skill that will keep enabling us to harness the potential of generative AI? It is problem formulation — the ability to identify, analyze, and delineate problems.”

Thanks for joining me on another Future of Product! I hope you got some value from this edition - and if not, don’t worry, we’ll be back to the normal format next week. Also, if you have any feedback on the newsletter or pod to this point please (seriously, please, I’m begging you), comment with your thoughts here on Substack - I want to make sure I’m tailoring my content to be as useful for you all as possible, plus comments show Substack that the newsletter is bringing you value.
If you missed this week’s podcast episode with Barkha Herman, founder @ South Florida Women in Technology, be sure to give it a listen (you can do that by clicking here), it’s one of the best yet and the subject matter is one that’s close to my heart. Plus, keep an eye out for next week’s podcast with Tyler Carlson, co-founder @ Resquared.
Until next time my cyborg friends.
